Genetic Background

The breed that we know as the Russian Blue did not spring into existence from the pairing of a couple of other-colored cats. It is a natural breed, which other breeders then took and selectively refined and defined its distinguishing traits. But they did this using known Russian Blues only (excepting the brief instance after World War II when blue-point Siamese were used as outcrosses to increase the then decimated genetic ranks). By this selectiveness the breed as a whole has a consistent look to it. The mating of two Russian Blues will always produce another blue genetic copy of themselves. The exception to this is the occasional “pointed’ Russian Blue which is the result of a recessive gene going back to that brief Siamese outcross over 50 years ago.

Around 1972 the Russian Blue was more or less back to its original form. But the Siamese influence on the genes was still not gone. Every now and then blue-point kittens appear in litters from two Russian Blue parents, as well as eastern typed blue kittens. In all cases you can count on having a Siamese in the pedigree of both parents somewhere.

The Russian Blue was out crossed with a blue Siamese to strengthen the gene. Due to this out crossing, some Russian Blue litters will contain pointed coat kittens.

Russian Pointed's have the same qualities as their blue littermates The coat being: Short, Soft and Silky And having a wonderful temperments.

Only difference from a blue, and a pointed, in the Russian Breed, is the eye colour, and coat colour, Otherwise they are the same. Friendly and Beautiful.
